Due Date

A due date $d_j$ for job $j$ is a target completion time used to measure whether the job is late.

If job $j$ completes at time $C_j$, its lateness is

$$L_j=C_j-d_j.$$

Penalty

Due dates are usually soft: a job may complete after $d_j$, but this can increase an objective such as maximum lateness or unit penalty.
