Gricean Pragrmatics

Gricean pragmatics is a theory of meaning where the meaning of an utterance is determined by the speaker’s intention.

The meaning of what someone says is whatever the speaker intends for the listener to believe as a result of hearing it. For communication to be successful it’s not enough for the listener to simply come to believe something. The speaker must also intend for the listener to recognise their intention, and the listener’s belief should be formed on the basis of recognising that intent.
