Index Set

An index set is a set $I$ used to label the elements of a family $(x_i{)}_{i\in I}$. Formally, given a function

$$x:I\to X,$$

the set $I$ is the domain of indices: each $i\in I$ picks out one element $x_i=x(i)$ of the set $X$.
