Begriff (concept) in Hegel is not merely a general idea or definition, but the necessary structure and interrelation of a thing’s determinations, through which it becomes intelligible what the thing is and how its determinations develop from one another.
To know something begrifflich (conceptually) therefore means not merely to perceive it immediately or accept it as given, but to understand its internal structure and necessary development.
