A Bestimmung (determination) in Hegel is a specific way in which something is defined or characterised, distinguishing it from what it is not.
The determinations of a thing are therefore the particular features, relations, or conceptual structures through which it is what it is. In Hegel, these determinations are often understood through their relations to, and development into, other determinations.
