Substanz (substance) in Hegel is the underlying, objective whole in which individual things, persons, or determinations have their reality and meaning. It is not merely something underlying them, but the structured unity to which they belong as moments.
To live substantially therefore means to experience oneself as embedded in such an objective whole, rather than as an isolated subject standing opposed to it.
