Definition

Engram

An engram is the physical substrate of a stored memory, often thought of as the pattern of changes in neurons (and supporting cells) that encodes a learned experience. Traditionally, this has been associated with changes at synapses, but recent work suggests that intracellular processes (e.g. gene expression, protein phosphorylation) also contribute to long‑term memory traces.

The term was first coined by the German scientist Richard Semon.
