Definition

Gestalt Thinking

Gestalt thinking is a mode of cognition that starts from the whole rather than from isolated parts. It recognises structure, relations, and context before explicit symbolic analysis.

It is often described as holistic or pattern-based thinking. It is related to unsymbolised thinking and relevance realisation.

Features

  • It favours global structure over local detail.
  • It is useful for intuition, analogy, and pattern recognition.
  • It can precede explicit verbal explanation.

Contrast

Gestalt thinking contrasts with analytical thinking, which decomposes a problem into smaller parts and reasons step by step.
