Substitution Cipher

A substitution cipher is a cipher that replaces symbols of the plaintext by other symbols in order to produce ciphertext.

Contrast

A substitution cipher changes the symbols while keeping their positions. In contrast, a transposition cipher keeps the symbols and changes their positions.

Examples

Caesar's Cipher

A simple example is Caesar’s cipher, where each letter is shifted by a fixed amount.
