Nociceptive Processing
Nociceptive processing is the neural transmission and central interpretation of signals from nociceptors that encode actual or potential tissue damage.
It comprises three stages: transduction at the peripheral receptor, transmission along afferent fibres to the spinal cord and brainstem, and modulation within supraspinal structures such as the thalamus and cortex.
Migraine Context
In early migraine, nociceptive processing is driven by meningeal nociceptors and trigeminal nerve terminals.
As the attack progresses, sustained input induces central sensitisation, amplifying and prolonging pain beyond the initial peripheral stimulus.
