Definition

Sumatriptan

Sumatriptan is a first-generation triptan, a selective 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist used for acute migraine treatment.

It was the first triptan to be developed and remains a widely prescribed abortive agent.

Administration

Available as oral tablets, subcutaneous injection, and intranasal spray. The subcutaneous formulation provides the fastest onset of action.

Limitations

Contraindications

Contraindicated in coronary artery disease, uncontrolled hypertension, and peripheral vascular disease due to its vasoconstrictive effects.
